Oakdale Adding Technology Tools

This year Oakdale was awarded a grant from 3M to purchase two electronic student response systems (SRS). Each system contains approximately 30 devices. These remote control looking devices allow each individual student to quickly answer teacher directed questions and send the information electronically to the teacher’s computer. The devices have proven highly engaging and motivating for students. Even better, the immediate feedback to the teacher about every student’s answer has allowed teachers to more accurately gauge student understanding in real time. To learn more about the Senteo, go to http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-US/Products/Senteo/

Beginning in 2009-2010 Oakdale Elementary will be adding another technology tool –interactive white boards. Each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher, and our Math Specialist will have one of these devices installed in the classroom. Specifically, we are purchasing SMART Boards, from SMART Technologies. Smart Boards are approximately 70” diagonal screens that mount directly over existing whiteboards. It works with an LCD projector mounted on the ceiling. These devices work in concert with the teacher computer in the classroom. An image of the computer is projected on to the SMART Board. The screen is touch sensitive so users can control the computer from the SMART Board. In addition, users can write on the SMART Board, manipulate objects, and save work. These capabilities allow the entire class access to the one computer in the classroom. Teachers can use word processing, spreadsheets, the Internet, video, presentation software, and many other applications INTERACTIVELY with students. To learn more about SMART Boards, go to  http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-US/Products/SMART+Boards/default.htm. You can view a couple of videos that demonstrate the capabilities of these tools and a testimonial by clicking the links below.

Using funds from a variety of sources, including the Oakdale PTO, we are purchasing 10 SMART Boards for 2009-2010. If you are interested in helping Oakdale Elementary purchase additional SMART Boards, please make out a check to Oakdale Elementary and put “SMART Boards” in the memo line. Drop it off in the office or you can mail it directly to the school. Your donation will be deposited in a special fund specifically for SMART Boards.

Oakdale Sees Progress in Reading Proficiency!

Oakdale students recently completed their winter 2009 MAP tests in reading. The results are encouraging. Last year 67% of students in grades 3 through 5 were proficient on the state MCA tests in reading. According to some correlation studies done by our district Assessment Coordinator, about 75% of this year’s 3rd through 5th graders are “on track” to be proficient when they take the state reading test this April. THAT WOULD BE AN EIGHT PERCENTAGE POINT INCREASE! In addition to this great news, 82% of our 2nd graders are “on-track” to be proficient, but they won’t take the state MCA test until they are 3rd graders. Way to go students, parents, and staff. Keep up the good work.
